DRM support

DRM support

Postby mautilus » Fri Aug 09, 2013 4:57 am

Hi,

How is it with the DRM support? So far LG and Philips handled it differently and Panasonic did not have any support for HTML5 applications.

How this will be handled?

Hi,

based on the support for the Smart TV Alliance specification version, platforms support a set of DRM methods such as PlayReady. It depends on the platform which version of the Smart TV Alliance specification (and thus: DRM methods) is supported. Of course some platforms could support more DRM methods than those mandated by the Smart TV Alliance specification.

Hi,

Thanks fro your answers. According the specification v2.0, the PlayReady is mandatory, of course if then the manufacturer supports e.g. Widevine, Marlin or e.g. SecureMedia or VCAS, then this is something extra.

1) Does that mean that all manufacturers like Panasonic, Toshiba or VESTEL supports PlayReady?

2) Is there common PlayReady API?

The reason I am asking is that we are developing also for Panasonic Viera TVs and in the last debate with Panasonic team (~3 weeks ago) they told me they do not currently support any DRM, but they plan doing that, so I am a bit confused now.

Thanks fro clarification.

Typically, manufacturers decide which platforms comply to (which version of) the Smart TV Alliance specification, so there is no black and white answer for this question.

The Smart TV Alliance specification defines a common way of using the PlayReady API, refer to section 3.5.1.2 of the specification version 2.x.

Hi,

Okay, so that means that the fact Panasonic or TOSHIBA is SmartTV Alliance member means they might not even have the TV that is specification 2.0 compliant if I understand you correctly.

Well that is very confusing for many customers honestly, since on the Internet they can read Panasonic joined the SmartTV Alliance in January 2013, in the version 2.0 specification they see the PlayReady is included. If they put those together it leads to expectation that the newest Panasonic TV will support PlayReady. It will be really good to have some page and clarify that.

Thanks for clarifying the PlayReady API we need to do some demo to see that as soon as we will know which models are specification 2.0 compliant as promised there viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15.

BTW - I am impressed by the quickness you are answering my questions. Keep that please, the excellent quality of the developer's forum and their community was one of the key success factors behind the famous forum.nokia.com in the Symbian era.

Not exactly, it just means that the manufacturer decides which platforms are supporting the Smart TV Alliance specification. Please also refer to the general questions list for the answer on when a list of specific devices that support the Smart TV Alliance specification is published by the Smart TV Alliance itself.

I am new to the SmartTV Alliance and this forum, but I just downloaded the SDK Manual and I am not sure if that is the specification you refer to or not ( cannot find another download on the developers site, please point me to the right document), but section 3.5 of the 2.5 SDK is the DIAL support.

I would have expected something in SDK to allow the app to query the device to determine DRM capabilities. I do see the smarttv_getPlatform() call documented in section 3.2.3 but this doesn't seem to contemplate DRM capabilities in the response. Am I missing something? How do we determine if the device supports a specific DRM?

Thanks,

Hi Dakaz

The safe ground is using the PlayReady and SmoothStreaming. It must be mandatory supported by all STA 2.0 compatible devices Philips, LG and Toshiba supports that, Panasonic not yet (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15).

I have never used the OIPF DRMAgent, so I am not sure if they do not have some DRM capability detection mechanism
