although there are multiple solutions that could work, there is no "general" mechanism that the Smart TV Alliance proposes. As long as the solution is compatible with the Smart TV Alliance specification, it could work in your application.
Examples that may make integration difficult for authentication mechanisms:
* the need to include 3rd party web content or redirect to a 3rd party web site - as these are (generally) not made for Smart TV, this could be complicated
* the option to control the input with the available input methods : as for some platforms, an onscreen keyboard is required, the authentication option needs to take that into account.
Mostly, you would want to base your method on a mechanism that allows you to create your own STA compliant login page/front end, and perform the authentication independent from the front end code.
